It’s been a roller coaster couple of months here at Flame Red with hardly a moment to sit down and take a breath. Having released the Professional version of Cost A Cake Pro for The Cake Makery, we seem to have spent our time fixing user-reported issues and immersing ourselves in the intricacies of online marketing.

It’s been hard work, but ultimately a rewarding experience and we’ve learned a heck of a lot about what does and doesn’t work when it comes to getting mobile users to part with their hard-earned cash.

The bottom line seems to be, that the old adage “If you build it, they will come” holds about as much water as a bucket full of holes, with no bottom.. and no sides.. in fact, imagine just a handle that’s being used as a bucket. That’s how much use it is.

Without advertising, the chances are all of your hard work will be dead in the water and join the two-thirds of App Store apps that get hardly any downloads. So, how did we set about promoting Cost A Cake Pro? Ina  word, Facebook.

The Cake Makery has a good following on Facebook so they set about promoting the app through in-page ads and by plugging it in news postings. It turns out that FB have some very handy tools for managing the process but even so, you’ll need to know what you’re doing to make effective use of them.

If I get time, I’ll expand on this post and give some insights into exactly what was done and why and how it worked, but for now, heed my warning – without advertising and marketing, your ability to make money from your apps will be severely held back…
